Break-ups are a part of nearly every relationship (even the ones that end up being “forever”) and can leave you feeling like your heart has been ripped right out of your chest.

If you are, then stop feeling sorry for yourself and start mapping out your battle plan. Action equals results, and despairing is an action that only results in prolonged sadness.

Tip # 1 : Deal with your issues

Before you start working toward winning back your ex, work through any anger or resentment you may feel.

It is possible to feel a deep love for someone, even while you are angry or disappointed in them.

Make sure that, before you work on getting back together, you’ve worked through the resentment and are just feeling the love, otherwise you are setting yourself up to fail yet again by bringing stress and expectations (such as that he will change) into the relationship from the beginning.

Tip # 2 : Don’t try to be someone else

You’ve probably heard that you shouldn’t try to change your partner, but you don’t try to be someone you’re not, either. It is extremely tempting to want to be the person you think your ex wants, in hopes that they’ll come back to you but…

A relationship can only succeed if both partners are being genuine. There are good reasons (personality strengths and compatibilities) that you were together in the first place, focus on those.

Of course you should also consider things you have said or done that created stress and try to improve on them and learn to compromise, but don’t start acting like someone you’re not.

Tip # 3 : Be your best self

It is all too easy to get so depressed after your ex leaves you that you forget about yourself. You might get so wrapped up in the pain of your loss that you stop doing things that make you feel, look, and act better. Your tear-stained cheeks, messy hair and growing waistline will do nothing to entice your love back to you!

Not only do you look bad, you send a message that you can’t live without them, something that makes you look desperate and undesirable.

Instead, go about your life as if you know who you are and you have an identity, even without them. This will have them wanting to be around you more.

  • Make renewed efforts to look great. This is not as much for your ex as for your own self-confidence. Get a haircut, a manicure or buy some new clothes.
  • Take care of your health. Eat foods that will give you the proper nourishment to help your mood and energy levels. Get exercise every day which will release endorphins and help you feel great.
  • Take some time to meditate, pray or otherwise improve your spirit. Take a little break from the stress of life and relationships every day to think about what is most important to you and what your long term goals are in life.
  • Work to overcome bad habits. Think about what you would like most to change about your personality and set goals to work toward making those changes.

Tip # 4 : Keep dates set before the break-up

You want to get your ex to spend time with you again, hoping they’ll remember what it was they loved about you, and what better excuse than a preset date?

Maybe you bought tickets to a concert that will end up taking place after you’ve broken up. Suggest to your ex that you still go to the concert (or open house, party, whatever it is) together since you were both already planning on going.

Be matter-of-fact about it if she seems skeptical. Make it sound like a practical thing to save the tickets, rather than a romantic date. Who knows what might happen when you find yourselves together again!

Tip # 5 : Keep in Touch

This one can be a little tricky, depending on the circumstances of your breakup. If it was an ugly one, once you’ve worked through your issues (see tip #1) just drop them a line telling them you hope they’re okay.

Also tying up loose ends, such as giving back a jacket or other personal effects can provide you with an opportunity to show that you still care. Don’t be overbearing, but let them know that you want to be friends by how you talk to them.

Tip # 6 :D on’t stalk!!

Your hunger to have your love back in your life can sometimes cloud your judgment. Be careful not to hound him or her! If you call or text several times a day or find ways to “bump into” them or their friends, you can do more damage than good.

You don’t want to appear overeager and you definitely don’t want to scare them off for good!

Tip # 7 : Don’t be demanding

Remember, once you’ve broken up you and your ex have, presumably, gone your separate ways. They doesn’t owe you anything anymore. Demanding that they make time for you, even if it’s just to return your CD’s is not a good way to win them back.

Be open and kind. Recognize that everyone heals at different speeds and you may have to wait a little before they’re ready to have you back, even as a friend.

Tip # 8 : Put friendship first

Okay, this one isn’t right for everyone, but most commonly one person wants to get back together before, or more than, the other. Since you’re the one putting forth the effort, be sure to emphasize your friendship and the fun you have together and let the romance trickle (or flood) back in later.

In some situations this is not the best advice. Sometimes flirting and being affectionate are what will win them back. Feel out the situation and be sensitive to their feelings and any signals they may be sending.

Tip # 9 : Keep your dignity

You want to keep yourself physically and emotionally “together”, but also maintain your confidence in yourself in relation to them. Again, avoid looking and acting desperate.

Some big no-nos that you definitely want to avoid are:

DO NOT:

Try to convince them to take you back

Remind them of how it used to be by talking about it a lot

Buy them gifts

Tell them how much you love them repeatedly

Tip # 10 : Be confident and happy

The last thing you want is for them to take you back out of pity. Also, this rarely happens anyway. The only way your relationship can be lasting is if they take you back because they like you, not out of a sense of duty, guilt or pity.

The more confident and satisfied you are, the more anybody will like you, especially your ex. They will want to be around you because of how your personality shines.
